A chronic autoimmune disorder causing patches of skin to lose their pigment due to melanocytes (pigment-making cells) being attacked and destroyed.
What is it?
Vitiligo is a chronic skin condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks pigment-producing cells (melanocytes), causing patches of skin to lose their color. These white patches, known as macules, can appear anywhere on the body but are most commonly found on the face, hands and sun-exposed areas. Vitiligo often begins in individuals in their 20s. Although its exact cause is not fully understood, it is frequently linked to autoimmune disorders, genetic factors or environmental triggers like sunburn or stress. While vitiligo doesn’t pose a risk to overall health, it can affect a person’s appearance and emotional well-being. It can affect people of all skin tones, with lighter patches being more noticeable on darker skin.
At Huntington Dermatology, we specialize in diagnosing and treating vitiligo, whether it’s limited to small areas or widespread across the body. With the right treatment plan, we have successfully helped many patients restore their skin color. Our dermatology services are available to residents of Huntington, West Virginia.
How is it treated?
While there is no cure for vitiligo, various treatments can help restore skin color or reduce the contrast between affected and unaffected areas. Treatment options depend on the extent and location of the depigmented patches and may include medicated creams like topical corticosteroids or light therapy (phototherapy) to stimulate pigment production.
