Rosacea

Rosacea is a common, long-term inflammatory skin condition that causes redness and bumps, most often on the nose, cheeks and forehead.

What is it?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that causes redness, visible blood vessels and sometimes pimples on the face. It most commonly affects the central areas, including the cheeks, nose, forehead and chin. In addition to persistent redness, rosacea can lead to symptoms such as burning, stinging sensations and dry or irritated eyes. Other signs include facial swelling, dry and flaky skin, broken blood vessels, an enlarged nose and ongoing redness.

While rosacea typically occurs in middle-aged or older adults, particularly those with fair skin, its exact cause remains unclear. However, factors such as genetics, environmental triggers (like sun exposure, stress and heat) and an overactive immune system are believed to contribute to its development. Although there is no cure for rosacea, there are effective treatments available to help manage symptoms and control flare-ups.

How is it treated?

Because rosacea is often confused with acne, allergies or eczema due to similar symptoms, it’s important to visit a board-certified dermatologist for an accurate diagnosis. At Huntington Dermatology, we specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of rosacea. Our goal is to help reduce redness, control flare-ups and improve the overall appearance of your skin. Treatment options for rosacea may include topical medications, oral medications, laser therapy and personalized skincare routines to reduce inflammation, redness and prevent flare-ups.

While there is no complete cure for rosacea, our team can help you develop a treatment plan to keep symptoms under control and work with you to identify the specific triggers of your outbreaks. Understanding what triggers your condition can significantly reduce the frequency and intensity of your symptoms.
