Skin Infections

A skin infection occurs when bacteria, viruses or fungi enter the skin, causing inflammation, irritation and sometimes the formation of blisters or sores.

What is it?

Skin infections occur when harmful microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites, enter the skin and cause inflammation, irritation or sores. Common skin infections include cellulitis, impetigo, fungal infections (like athlete's foot and ringworm), viral infections (such as herpes simplex or shingles) and bacterial infections (including staph infections).

Symptoms can range from redness, swelling and pain to the development of pus-filled blisters or open sores commonly found on the skin, hair and nails. Skin infections can be mild and self-limiting, but in some cases, they can become more serious and require medical treatment.

How is it treated?

We offer comprehensive care for various types of skin infections. Our dermatologists and expert providers are skilled in diagnosing and treating skin infections, offering both immediate treatment and preventive care to ensure your skin heals properly and doesn’t develop further complications.

Treatment varies depending on the type of infection and whether it’s caused by a fungal, viral or bacterial agent. Treatment options may include:

  • Topical medications: Creams, ointments or sprays containing antibiotics, antifungals or antiviral agents.
  • Oral medications: For more widespread or severe infections, oral antibiotics, antifungals or antivirals may be prescribed to target the infection from the inside out.
  • Wound care: Proper wound care and dressing recommendations to promote healing and prevent secondary infections.
  • Skin care advice: Guidance on gentle skincare routines, proper hygiene practices and tips for avoiding common infection triggers.
