Seborrheic Dermatitis

A common skin disorder marked by red, scaly, itchy and flaking skin primarily on the scalp, face, chest and back.

What is it?

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin condition that causes red, itchy and flaky patches, often accompanied by greasy scales. It typically affects areas with a high concentration of oil glands, such as the scalp, face (especially around the nose, eyebrows and ears), chest and back. In some cases, seborrheic dermatitis can lead to dandruff or crusty, yellowish patches on the scalp. The exact cause is unknown, but it may be linked to an overgrowth of yeast on the skin, excess oil production or an inflammatory response. Stress, hormonal changes and certain medications can exacerbate symptoms, but seborrheic dermatitis is not contagious.

The symptoms often vary in intensity and may even vanish and later reappear. The condition generally isn't harmful, but it can be uncomfortable.

How is it treated?

While there's no cure for seborrheic dermatitis, our dermatologists in Huntington, West Virginia, can create a personalized treatment plan to control inflammation, soothe irritation and restore the health of your skin. Regular visits can help track the progress and efficacy of treatments, which may include topical antifungals, corticosteroid creams, lotions or shampoos. Lifestyle modifications like minimizing stress and a thorough skincare routine can also aid in managing flare-ups.

Seborrheic dermatitis can be frustrating to manage, but with the right care, you can keep it under control and minimize its impact on your skin and overall well-being. At Huntington Dermatology, we offer expert diagnosis, tailored treatment plans and ongoing support to help you manage seborrheic dermatitis effectively. If you’re experiencing symptoms or suspect seborrheic dermatitis, schedule a consultation today for expert care.
