Dandruff

A common scalp condition characterized by the shedding of dead skin cells, often resulting in flakes and itching.

What is it?

Dandruff is a common scalp condition characterized by the shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp. It often causes white or yellowish flakes to appear in the hair or on the shoulders, accompanied by itching or irritation. Dandruff can result from various factors, including dry skin, seborrheic dermatitis, fungal infections or sensitivity to hair care products. While it is not a serious condition, it can be persistent and uncomfortable.

How is it treated?

A dermatologist plays a key role in managing and treating dandruff. Our expert providers will conduct a thorough scalp examination and may perform additional tests to determine the root cause of your dandruff. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying factors and alleviating symptoms.

Based on the severity and cause, we may recommend medicated shampoos, ointments or lotions. For more stubborn cases, prescription-strength shampoos or steroid lotions may be needed. We’ll also offer advice on proper hair care and lifestyle changes to help avoid certain triggers. With regular follow-up appointments, we can track your progress and adjust treatment as needed to ensure optimal results.
