Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic, noncontagious auto-immune skin disease characterized by patches of abnormal red, pink or purple skin and dry, itchy skin.

What is it?

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition that causes the rapid buildup of skin cells, leading to thick, scaly patches of skin. These patches, often red or silver in appearance, can appear anywhere on the body but are most commonly found on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back. They are often itchy and can be accompanied by a burning sensation, discomfort and dryness. In some cases, the skin around the patches may crack and bleed. Psoriasis can also cause joint stiffness and swelling, a condition known as psoriatic arthritis. While not contagious, psoriasis can be triggered or worsened by factors such as stress, infections, certain medications or even changes in the weather.

The symptoms can fluctuate and undergo cycles that could last for several days or even weeks. Psoriasis is commonly a chronic condition. While it can’t be cured, effective treatments are available to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

How is it treated?

At Huntington Dermatology, we specialize in the diagnosis and management of psoriasis, offering a variety of treatments to help control flare-ups and reduce symptoms. Our goal is to provide relief, improve the appearance of the skin and prevent future outbreaks.

Treatment options vary but may include:

  • Topical treatments: Creams, ointments and shampoos containing corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and slow skin cell turnover.
  • Light therapy (Phototherapy): UV light treatment to help slow the rapid skin cell production associated with psoriasis.
  • Systemic medications: Oral or injectable medications that target the immune system to reduce inflammation and control skin cell production.
  • Biologic treatments: Targeted therapies that focus on specific parts of the immune system responsible for psoriasis flare-ups.

Treatment plans depend on the severity of the condition and individual lifestyle factors. We'll also provide guidance on managing triggers, maintaining a consistent skincare routine and using the right moisturizers to minimize flare-ups. Our team is here to work with you to develop a personalized approach to managing psoriasis.
