Rashes

Rashes are patches of skin that are abnormal in color or texture and can look bumpy, scaly or swollen and cause itchiness or pain.

What is it?

A rash is a change in the color, texture or appearance of the skin, often accompanied by irritation, itching, redness or swelling. Rashes can appear anywhere on the body and can result from a variety of causes, such as allergic reactions, infections, autoimmune conditions or environmental factors like heat or chemicals. While most rashes are mild and temporary, some can be a sign of a more serious underlying condition and may require medical attention. Various conditions like chickenpox, contact dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, ringworm and shingles can also cause rashes.

Typically rashes resolve on their own. Based on the guidelines of the American Academy of Dermatology Association, it is advisable to consult a board-certified dermatologist if you observe:

  • A rash that covers a significant portion of your body.
  • A rash that develops blisters, open sores, or raw skin.
  • Feeling ill or having a fever accompanying a rash.
  • A rapidly spreading rash.
  • A rash causing pain.
  • A rash affecting the eyes, lips, mouth or genital areas.

How is it treated?

Rashes are a common skin condition that we diagnose and treat at Huntington Dermatology. Our goal is to alleviate discomfort, reduce irritation and address the underlying cause of the rash. Our treatment options may include topical treatments, such as prescription creams, ointments and lotions that reduce inflammation, soothe itching and treat infections; antihistamines to control allergic reactions and reduce itching; corticosteroids to help manage symptoms and reduce redness and swelling; antibiotics or antifungals if the rash is caused by a bacterial or fungal infection.

Whether it’s a mild irritation or a more complex skin condition, we offer personalized treatment plans to ensure relief and long-term care.
