PDT combines light and a light-activated drug to treat conditions like acne, psoriasis and skin cancer.
What is it?
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a highly effective, non-invasive treatment that uses a special light-sensitive medication combined with targeted light to treat a variety of skin conditions. By increasing cellular turnover and stimulating collagen production, PDT helps minimize pores and reduce oil glands effectively. This advanced procedure is commonly used to treat precancerous growths, sun damage and early-stage skin cancers, as well as certain types of acne and other dermatological concerns like improving skin texture, tone and signs of aging.
PDT works by activating the medication with light, which helps destroy abnormal cells while leaving surrounding healthy skin intact. At Huntington Dermatology, our experienced dermatology team uses PDT to offer a safe and effective treatment for patients seeking to improve their skin health and appearance.
What to expect
Before undergoing PDT, one of our board-certified providers will conduct a thorough skin examination to determine if PDT is the right option for your specific needs. This initial consultation allows us to tailor the treatment plan to your individual condition.
The treatment has two-steps. First, our board-certified providers apply a light-sensitive topical medication (usually a gel or cream), sometimes called a photosensitizing agent, to the treatment area. Once the medication has been absorbed, a specialized light source will be used to activate the medication, which helps destroy damaged or abnormal cells. The light may feel warm or mildly uncomfortable, but the procedure itself is generally well tolerated. The duration of the light treatment depends on the area being treated.
After the procedure, you may experience redness, swelling or mild peeling in the treated area, which is normal and part of the healing process. Some patients may also notice increased sensitivity to sunlight, so it’s important to avoid direct sun exposure and apply sunscreen regularly. Your dermatologist will provide specific aftercare instructions to ensure the best possible results and minimize any discomfort.
