Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)

A skin condition characterized by red rashes or patches, often appearing in areas like the folds of the elbows, knees, hands, feet and cheeks. It results from a compromised skin barrier and can cause significant discomfort.

What is it?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition that causes dry, itchy and inflamed skin. While it often starts in childhood, eczema can affect individuals of any age and appear on any part of the body. Flare-ups can be triggered by various factors, including allergens, genetics, irritants, weather changes and even stress.

Though many people refer to their condition as eczema, it actually refers to a broader category of skin disorders. Atopic dermatitis is the most common form of eczema and can affect nearly any area of the skin. Symptoms include intense itching, red, dry and cracked skin, rashes that may ooze or become scaly, and thickened skin from chronic scratching.

The exact cause of eczema is not fully understood, but it is believed to result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Individuals with a family history of allergies, asthma or eczema are more likely to develop the condition. A weakened skin barrier can also contribute to dryness and irritation, triggering flare-ups. Eczema tends to follow a cycle of flare-ups and periods of remission that can last weeks, months or even years. Although eczema is not contagious, its symptoms can be uncomfortable and frustrating.

How is it treated?

While there is no cure for eczema, effective treatments can help manage symptoms and reduce flare-ups. At Huntington Dermatology, we offer comprehensive care tailored to your needs that may include topical treatments, guidance of an effective skin care routine including gentle moisturizers to keep your skin hydrated and protect the skin barrier, oral medications, light therapy and lifestye recommendations.
