Fungal Infections

Fungal infections occur when fungi grow on the skin, nails or hair, causing itching, redness and rashes. They thrive in warm, moist areas but are treatable with proper care.

What is it?

Fungal infections are caused by an overgrowth of fungi that can infect the skin, nails and hair. These infections are often more common in warm, moist environments and can affect anyone. The most common types of fungal infections include athlete's foot, ringworm and yeast infections, but they can occur in many forms. Fungal infections can cause discomfort, itching and visible rashes, and they may spread if left untreated.

Symptoms of fungal infections may present in the following ways:

  • Red, itchy or scaly skin
  • Circular, ring-shaped rashes (ringworm)
  • Cracked or peeling skin between toes (athlete’s foot)
  • Thickened, discolored nails
  • Yeast infections causing itching or irritation in skin folds

Because fungi thrives in warm, moist areas of the body, fungal infections typically appear between the toes, in the groin or under the nails. Common risk factors that include excessive sweating, poor hygiene, weakened immune system, sharing personal items (like towels or shoes)and wearing tight clothing or shoes that don't allow your skin to breathe.

How is it treated?

Fungal infections can be persistent and uncomfortable, but with the right treatment, they can be managed effectively. It's important to seek advice from a dermatologist if you believe you have a fungal infection, to deter further spread and potential complications.

At Huntington Dermatology, we offer effective, personalized care to clear up fungal infections and prevent recurrence. Typically, fungal infections respond well to topical or oral antifungal treatments so treatment options may include topical medications, oral medications, nail treatments and prevention and lifestyle tips. During your skin exam, our team will provide personalized care to help you get rid of your fungal infection and restore your skin, nails and hair to their healthiest state.
