What is it?
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, and it occurs when abnormal skin cells begin to grow uncontrollably. There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and melanoma. Basal and squamous cell cancers are more common and less aggressive, while melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer but is also more treatable when detected early.
Skin cancer can affect anyone and can appear anywhere on the body. It's most commonly found on skin areas overexposed to ultraviolet light, such as sunlight, tanning beds and sun lamps. It often appears as new growths, sores that don’t heal or changes in existing moles or freckles. Additional risk factors aside from excessive sun exposure include a history of sunburns, fair skin and family history of skin cancer.
It's important to pay attention to any new or changing spots or lumps on your skin that differ in shape, color, size or texture. If you have any skin spots or lumps that itch, bleed, crust or ooze, or if you notice any unusual or suspicious marks on your skin, we encourage you to come in for a full body skin exam.
