Restylane
The Restylane family of soft tissue fillers are hyaluronic acid dermal filler used for instant correction of fine lines, facial wrinkles, lip enhancement and facial anatomical volume correction. Restylane, Restylane Lyft, and Restylane Silk are made from a purified form of hyaluronic acid, a substance that exists naturally in your body. It is injected directly into the area that needs plumping, like the skin around your eyes, and where expression lines form. It also acts as a cushion beneath your skin, making it less likely to get damaged and helping your skin remain supple, elastic and looking youthful.

The Restylane Family of Products
Restylane, Restylane-L®, Restylane® Silk, Restylane Refyn, Restylane Defyn are all members of the Restylane family of products. Each is a clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid that is specifically formulated to act like your body’s own naturally produced hyaluronic acid, helping to instantly, visibly reduce moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds or add fullness to your lips in patients over 21.
Restylane – Fine Tuning for Your Lips, Wrinkles, & Lines
As the active ingredient in Restylane is hyaluronic acid. It occurs in the skin as a sugar that serves as a natural moisturizer within the connective tissues of your skin, providing moisture and plump and supple skin. As the years go by, the amount of the hyaluronic acid produced by the body slowly reduces, leading to those bothersome lines and wrinkles. Restylane is not derived from animals and has a high safety profile.
All of the Restylane fillers vary in consistency and placement depth. These areas may include:
- Worry Lines: Horizontal lines appearing on the forehead (forehead lines).
- Smile Lines: The lines that run from the corners of the mouth to the sides of the nose (nasolabial folds).
- Crow’s Feet: Lines which radiate outward from the corners of the eyes (periorbital lines).
- Frown Lines: Creases that form between the eyebrows over time (glabellar lines).
- Marionette Lines: Lines that extend downwards from the corners of the mouth (oral commissures).
- Smoker’s Lines: Fine lines which form on the upper lip (perioral or vertical lip lines)
Once the 20-30 minute appointment is complete, you can resume your normal activities. As with almost all dermal injections, temporary swelling, bruising or redness may occur.
Where Can Restylane® Be Used?
The lift and the lips you’ve been looking for
The Restylane family of products instantly adds volume to help restore youthful contours, so you’ll see results immediately following your treatment.
The Restylane family of products can be used to add volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, including the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds or laugh lines), the area just below the nose and above the upper lip; the corners of the mouth; and marionette lines—the area that extends downward from the corners of the mouth to the jawline.
Restylane, Restylane-L® and Restylane® Silk are the only FDA-approved products for lip enhancement in patients over 21 years, and are uniquely formulated to give your lips fullness and definition.
About Treatment Volume
Treatment volume should be limited to 6.0 mL in wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds, limited to 1.5 mL per lip (Restylane, Restylane-L or Restylane Silk only), and 1.0 mL in lip lines (Restylane Silk), as greater amounts significantly increase moderate and severe injection site reactions. The safety of effectiveness of treatment in areas other than nasolabial folds, lips, and lip lines has not been established in controlled clinical studies.
What are some side effects that may occur after treatment?
After treatment, you might have some swelling, redness, pain, bruising, or tenderness. These are typically mild in severity and normally last less than 7 days in nasolabial folds and less than 14 – 18 days in lips. Swelling may be more likely in patients under 36 years, and bruising may be more likely in patients over 35 years.
How Does Restylane Work?
Restylane works immediately by adding volume to smooth away wrinkles. A clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid, Restylane is specifically formulated to act like your body’s own hyaluronic acid, and eventually breaks down naturally.
The Result
After your appointment you will immediately notice the difference. Those results will last six to nine months. A ‘booster’ treatment between 4 ½ to 9 months after your initial treatment can maintain those results for up to 2 years. The increased result does not apply to lip augmentation.
